About me
Damien Jarvis
MBACP BA(Hons) MA PGDip
I am a registered, qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor offering psychodynamic therapy from my private practice in Brighton and Hove.
Experienced in working with adults and young people in agency, higher education and charity environments, I work with adults both in open-ended therapy and in short-term, time-limited therapy.
I practise psychodynamic counselling because I believe that it can lead to beneficial changes in life. In thinking about potential sources of anxiety and distress from the past, it is possible to enact change in the present by working to build new and deeper understanding of ourselves.
I work to the BACP’s Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions. Confidentiality and ethical practice are important to me. I welcome clients regardless of background and regardless of what they want to bring to therapy.
I also know that therapy can be a daunting prospect. I’ve been there myself. As a professional, qualified counsellor, I can provide a warm, non-judgemental, confidential space for us to explore what is troubling you.
I look forward to meeting you.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Psychodynamic therapy is a way of thinking about how your current experiences and actions are influenced by what has happened in your past and are shaped by the unconscious part of your mind.
In this type of therapy, the relationship between the therapist and you is the vehicle for exploration of your issues. The therapeutic relationship creates an environment whereby you feel able to speak candidly, free from judgement and in a confidential space. As the relationship with the therapist grows, you may feel able to explore more deeply, making use of an environment which you can trust in and where you feel accepted.
Building on the exploration and understanding generated in therapy, the goal is to see if changes can be made that will benefit you in the long-term by alleviating your distress.

It is important that you feel able to bring whatever you wish into the therapy room. I have experience of working with clients on a wide range of issues. Here are some examples:
Anger
Anxiety
Bereavement, grief and loss
Depression
Family issues
Low self-esteem
Relationship difficulties
Sexuality
Trauma

The best way to answer this question is to contact me so that we can arrange an initial, free consultation session. The relationship between us will be key to the therapy and so I want you to have the opportunity to decide if I feel like a good fit for you.
The initial session lasts 30 minutes and takes place online. -
